What is HPV?
The CDC explains that genital human papillomavirus (also called HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection. There are more than 40 strains of HPV that can affect the genital areas of both males and females. These HPV types can also infect the mouth and throat. Most people who become infected with HPV do not even know they have it. Most people with HPV do not develop symptoms or health problems from it, and in 90% of HPV cases, the body's immune system clears the virus naturally within two years. North Fulton Women's Specialists is happy to discuss the options when it comes to HPV prevention, so feel free to ask. Learn more about HPV at www.cdc.gov/hpv.

Should my daughter get the HPV vaccine?
A vaccine for HPV was released in the US during the summer of 2006. The vaccine is approved for females aged 9 to 26 with the target age being 11 to 13. Records have shown that the vaccine is highly effective if given before exposure to HPV and even if there has been known exposure to HPV. The decision to have your child vaccinated or not should be made after having a conversation with your physician, whether it is your child's pediatrician or your gynecologist. Learn more about HPV at www.cdc.gov/hpv.

What are some of the screenings and tests that are recommended for women?
In addition to a comprehensive physical exam that includes blood work, every woman needs to have the following tests or screenings when she reaches the appropriate age. Others not mentioned below should be discussed with your physician.
Cervical Cancer Screenings: this is conducted at the gynecologist's office by way of the Pap Smear
Breast Cancer Screenings: women should practice monthly self breast exams, yearly clinical breast exams with a physician, and annual mammograms after the age of 40, unless family history and other risk factors suggest younger. Discuss your unique screening regimen with your physician to ensure you are taking care of yourself the best way possible.
Colon Cancer Screenings: Colonoscopy starting at age 50
For more information about screenings you should be getting and when, visit www.womenshealth.gov/prevention.

Exercise is good for every person, whether young, old, male, female, pregnant, or not. If you were active prior to your pregnancy, you should be able to continue this activity in moderation. Low impact activity is preferred. If you did not have a regular exercise regimen prior to your pregnancy, you will need to consult your Ob/Gyn to ensure that you will not over exert yourself.
